Coast to coast walk

Crookey Cottage is conveniently located just 500 yards from Wainwright’s famous Coast to Coast walking route. Long distance walkers from all over the world have been following in AW’s footsteps for decades, crossing the country from St.Bees in the west, to Robin Hood’s Bay in the east. The walk passes through some of the most spectacular scenery in Great Britain, and indeed the world. Readers of Country Walking Magazine voted it the world’s no.2 walk in 2004!

The “Patterdale leg”, usually tackled on day 4/5 of the west-east route, starts with the steady ascent to Boredale Hause -just behind the cottage!
Depending on the weather (and/or your energy levels), there are several options available to you:

  1. The Full Monty – get an early start and walk all the way to Shap -16 miles
  2. Bampton break – Give the last 5 miles a miss and spend the night in Bampton, staying in Orton next night
  3. Let the boat take the strain – In rough weather, take the steamer up Ullswater to Pooley Bridge, then it’s a level and less exposed walk to Bampton/Shap – approx. 8 miles

C2C – Coast to Coast for cyclists

Although they don’t follow exactly the same path as the walkers, various routes have been devised to allow cyclists to enjoy the same beautiful countryside in a Coast to Coast Crossing from St Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay. Options exist for a challenging mountain bike crossing with some particularly demanding stages in the Lake District. Some of the more difficult off-road stages can easily be bypassed by taking advantage of myriad country lanes and backroads. There is secure storage space for two bikes at Crookey Cottage-larger groups accommodated by arrangement.

Many walkers and cyclists choose to lighten the load by using one of the dedicated baggage-transfer companies that service the route. Locally based Packhorse, for example, can provide everything from a simple transfer service (so your bags are waiting for you on arrival at your chosen accommodation) to an all-inclusive package including secure car parking, transfers to/from the start/end of the route, and all accommodation.

We will do all we can to ensure you start the Patterdale Leg with a full stomach, dry clothes&boots, and a great packed lunch!
